Bringing together new + established writers in multiple languages

Cantine Press is a new experiment in publishing. Founded in 2024 and based in Oakland, California, we are testing out what we like and will change what we do accordingly. To start, we are collecting works by new and established writers, and are especially keen to feature bay area locals. We will publish in multiple languages, beginning with English, French, and Spanish. We aren't picky about genre. We like book arts almost as much as literary arts, so you can find hand-bound Special Edition versions of our publications. And we pay all of our contributors.

Our name draws on multiple meanings; each inspires our ethos.

  • Cantine (fr). A dining hall where a collective can eat for free or cheap. An equalizing place of no-frills necessity.

  • Canteen (en). A container that carries sustenance along a journey and can easily be passed around. Think shared swigs around the campfire, or slipped to a comrade in the dim corner of a nightclub.

  • Cantina (es). A local bar that gathers friends, neighbors, and workers for a shared drink and a laugh. Of middling taste and exceptional fun.

At Cantine Press, currency is stories. Jokester, conspirer, dreamer, trickster, sage—join us.

Our people.
